(Semi)Automatic Freedom

I've never been one much for guns. Before living on my own, I never understood the need for ballistic protection. I grew up in a very safe suburb in New Jersey. Yes, we locked our doors, but I never felt any need for protection beyond that. Once GI Joe and I were married, and he began to deploy frequently, I began to feel a bit more uneasy on my own. GI Joe invested in a gun for household protection, took me to the range and taught me how to use it. I am still not completely comfortable with it, but I am comfortable with knowing that it's in the house and available, should the need to use it arise.  Since our initial investment, our collection has expanded, and I sleep soundly at night (even when I'm alone) knowing that my home is protected.
All of that said, now with the issue of gun-control so prevalent in the media and our government, we're forced to think twice about our right to bear arms. With the alleged proposals regarding limiting and banning the purchase and use of certain ammunition, as well as weapons, we're forced to consider all of the "what-ifs" that could effect our own collection. Personally, I don't feel like a weapons ban will eliminate any gun-violence. Guns are here, they've been her for hundreds of years, and they're not going anywhere whether some guys in DC say so or not. Just like there are laws prohibiting the sale or distribution of illicit controlled substances, or moonshine, the laws that are proposed governing control will be equally, if not more so, challenged and frequently broken.
Now, I may be a little biased, as I live with a man who spends the majority of his life (and all of his career) with multiple weapons strapped to his body. My husband is highly qualified and very educated on the function, safe use, and care of ballistic weapons. He has taught me to respect guns, to treat every weapon like it is loaded, and that there is no place for carelessness while handling a gun.
I have all intention of doing what I can to preserve my families' right to bear arms. We will continue utilize safe practices, and we will fight to make sure that we will always have our liberties and freedom.
